“We have met the enemy and he is us” is perhaps the most famous line from the old Pogo comic strip. This is the point made by Elizabeth Kolbert in The Fifth Extinction: An Unnatural History.  There have been five major extinctions; scientists are monitoring the sixth extinction, and this time around it appears that humanity itself is the cause.
