This promotion is modeled on the American Booksellers Association’s Indies First program. It was author Sherman Alexie who come up the idea of volunteering at his local bookstore. Small Business Saturday is a promotion by American Express to encourage shoppers, after Black Friday, to remember their local merchants on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving.
