The Emancipation Act of 1861 was an event, but Freedom was a process. And it occurred in different ways and at different times to different people. Sojourner Kincaid Rolle’s poem imagines the experiences of the black citizens of Galveston, Texas, when freedom arrived on the 19th of June, 1865.
